What to Look for in a Handyman

You should always vet your home remodeling contractor to make sure they’re qualified for the job. In today’s post, we highlight the qualifications and qualities you should look for in a professional handyman.

What to Look for in a Handyman

Insurance

Ask a prospective contractor about their insurance coverage. Hiring a contractor with workers’ insurance will protect you from any legal liabilities in case something goes wrong during the project.

Certifications

Verify that the handyman is a registered member of the Association of Certified Handyman Professionals (ACHP). To be accepted as a member, a contractor has to pass a certification exam to prove their knowledge of the trade. When working with an ACHP member, you can rest easy knowing you’ll receive a high level of service.

Level of Expertise

The number of certifications a home remodeling contractor has should give you a good idea of their expertise. However, there are other ways to gauge a handyman’s level of expertise. One of them is to check the number of years they’ve been working in the industry.

Customer Service

Gauging the level of customer service you can expect from a handyman can be tricky. That’s because what counts as excellent customer service can be subjective. You can try going through a handyman’s online reviews. Keep in mind that a few negative reviews aren’t necessarily a red flag—misunderstandings can occur after all. If there’s a negative review, check how the handyman responded. This response sometimes gives you a better idea of the level of customer service they provide than several good reviews. Alternatively, you can ask for referrals from friends and family.
